Anna's Childrens Stories

Midterm Reflection

March 17, 2008

I can say that when I started the semester I was not sure what to expect since I am a BUS student.  I felt like I was a little out my element and totally clueless at first.

I am taking this class as an elective and am enjoying it more than I ever thought I could.  I love that we are not only able but expected to show our inner child and just let loose and have fun in class.  The first day we meet we got to meet Maxime which was so much fun and excitement I could not wait for the next class. When it comes to the four major strands of course work I think I am one class member who is learning a lot since I am not an education major.  I have minored in communication which is one of my tracks for my B.U.S. degree along with Psychology and Sociology.  I have taken many different communication classes but feel like I am being exposed to a whole new way of communicating.  I have been taught numerous different aspects and theories in the field of communication. But now instead of being taught, I am learning the different ways in which teachers communicate with their students so it’s like I’m on the other end of the spectrum. I am also able to observe communication within the class room during our trips to Tibbetts Middle School.  I get the chance to see how students write and read their work aloud and communicate with each other offering constructive criticism on a paper.  I think it is great that we are able to work with the students at Tibbetts and that we enjoy it more then them.  It is a great way to be able to interact and collaborate not only with the students but each other since we are looked at as a “teacher”.  Which I have to admit is a little weird for me so it’s a good thing I am not too shy.

I am doing on going research to try and figure out exactly which genre a book fits in to because I tend to classify them into a few.  This has been one of my biggest challenges so far this semester, thank goodness for the library aids.  I am also researching my literary elements intrinsic and extrinsic poetry and my genre; poetry.  I am really excited that I am in the group doing the poetry reading since it is my genre and I really enjoy hearing and reading poetry.  Of course with out technology we wouldn’t be able to do much of anything for this class and in my case for many of my classes since they are I.T.V.

I feel as though this class is giving me a whole new way to approach future situations and as an auntie to 5 nieces and nephews now, a lot of what I learn is going to be helpful.  I am learning so much that I did not know and so many new ways of learning/teaching.  I think that I will be able to take all I am learning with me in to what ever area of the medical field I end up in and use it successfully.  I feel like I will deserve a B+ or heck why not an A.  Either way I am enjoying the class thoroughly and am looking forward to the rest of the semester.
