Autobiography/Biography

 

Margaret Davidson. Louis Braille the boy who invented books for the blind.  The story of Louis Braille who at the age of twelve decided he was going to invent an easier way for the blind to read.  It took him three years to perfect his alphabet of raised dots, which is still used today.

 

Fantasy

Richard Scarrys. Sniff the Detective. Sniff is a detective who uses his powerful nose to sniff out a crime. There is a story about a case he solves and his surprise birthday celebration.

 

Hans Wilhelm. Tyrone the Double Dirty Rotten Cheater.  Tyrone is bigger than all his friends and is cheating to win all the games on their camping trip. He spoils all the fun for everyone but gets caught in the end.

 

Stephen Cosgrave. Dragolin. Dragolin is a pudgy little dragon who cannot blow a flame nor a puff of smoke.  He is an outcast but meets a new friend who says if you believe then you can do anything.

 

Katherine Paterson. The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks. A possessive emperor claims possession of a beautiful mandarin duck that becomes love sick.  Two servants let him go and then are sent away and saved mysteriously by the ducks.

 

William Joyce. Dinosaur Bob and his Adventures with the Family Lazardo. The Lazardo family goes on safari and meets Bob who invite on their trip and they like him so much.  They invite him home with them which he loves the idea.  He joins the local baseball team and lives happily with the family and town.

 

Arnold Label. Owl at Home. A few different stories about Owl spending time at home and all the different things he does at night.

 

Robert Talbon. Fish Story. A story about a little fish and a big cat who is trying to trick the little fish.  In the end the little fish has the last laugh not the big cat.

 

Jane Thayer. Gus was a Friendly Ghost. A story about a Ghost named Gus who makes a new friend.

 

Jane Thayer. Gus and the Baby Ghost. A story about Gus the Ghost who finds a baby ghost.  Gus takes the responsibility of raising the baby ghost who everyone loves.

 

Syd Hoff. Julius. Davy and his father find Julius a gorilla to come join the circus. Julius loves the circus and being a part of the team. 

 

Marjorie Weinman Sharmot.  Mooch the Messy.  Mooch is a rat who lives in a hole under Boston Massachusetts who likes it to be messy.  His father is coming for a visit who likes things to be neat so he cleans up his mess.

 

Robert McCloskey. Make way for Ducklings. Two Mallard ducks find a perfect new home with a great new friend.  They love it so much they walk their duckling’s trough town to get to their new home.

 

Peggy Parish. The Chimp that went to school. Corky the chimpanzee is mistaken for a seven year old boy by a truant officer with bad eyesight. 

 

Lucy Bate. Little Rabbits Loose Tooth. A little rabbit loose a front tooth and leaves it for the tooth fairy.  She makes sure to let her parents know about it and that the “toothfairy” will get it and leave a surprise.

 

Madia Silversman. The get along gang and the bad looser.  Zipper is a soar looser and is a bad sport when he looses. He didn’t win the contest and is taking it out on everyone but then realizes that he is over reacting. 

 

Jack Outwits the Giants. By Paul Brett Johnson.  Jack is a young boy who gets caught in a rain storm so he goes to the closest house for shelter. Two giants live there a husband and wife who offer him dinner and a place to stay dry from the storm. He is nervous so he puts a bag of feed under the blanket to make it look like him sleeping.  The husband giant comes at midnight and grabs what he thought was jack and ate it.  The next morning they were surprised to see Jack they thought that he was a witch.  So they ask him to do a few different impossible tasks and he ends up out smarting them in the end.

 

Ruby Fairy Tales. Retold by Jane Carruth. A collection of classic fairy tales.

 

The Dream Tree.  Stephen Casgrave. A cute story about a fuzzy caterpillar who learns about and becomes a butterfly.

 

Baby Unicorn and Baby Dragon. Jean Claudio Marzollo.  Baby Unicorn and Baby Dragon have no magical powers but use their smarts to out wit the wicked elf.

 

Smurphany in C. Harmony Smurf was playing out of tune so was sent away. He runs across a fairy who gives Harmony a new horn that blows a spell casting tune. 

 

Folktales

 

Retold for Lucky book club. Jack and the Beanstock. The classic tale of Jack and his magical beans that grow the magical bean stock he climbs.

 

Romeo Muller Puff the Magic Dragon. The story and adventures of puff the magic dragon.

Francene Sabin. Elizabeth Blackwell the first women doctor. A tale about Elizabeth Blackwell her growing up all she accomplished and her wisdom.

 Robert A. Morris. Dolphin. Tells about dolphins what they do and eat and about the baby dolphins and how the mothers take care and raise them.

 

Lauren Pringle. Follow a Fisher.  Tells about a fisher what it is what they eat and where they live.

 

Helen R Haddad. Truck and Loader. Tells about different types of tractors and how they all work.

 

Karate! Russell Kozuki. Instructions on how to perform basic Karate steps/moves.

 

Adventures in Camping. A how to guide to camping that shows all the necessary steps and supplies.

 

Exploring the Wonders of the World. David Seidman. Pictures and excerpts on many of the magnificent land marks around the world.

 

Be a Plant Detective. Linda Gamlin. A informational guide to plants and all there is to learn about them.

 

Picture Books

Angela Ballerinas Shapes. Katherine Holabird. This book is great with applying shapes to every day life and the objects we encounter daily. 

 

Hello Kitty Sleeps Over- Robin Harris-This is a book that tells the about Hello Kitty’s sleep over at her grandparents and what they did.

 

In the Rain Forest, A Nature Tail book- Maurice Pledger- This is a touch feel and see picture book.  It has furry, fuzzy, sticky, rough and soft all different feeling for all the creatures you will see in the rainforest.

 

In the Forrest, A Nature Trail Book- Maurice Pledger- This is a touch and fell picture book that employs many things there is frogs to count and many fuzzy thing to feel. 

 

The Very Hungry Caterpillar- Eric Carle- This book is great at teaching about counting, fruit and how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.

 

Mike Thaler. It’s Me, Hippo! A variety of stories about hippo making his house another about painting a picture. There are also two others about wonderful Hippo feels and his Birthday celebration.

 

Norman Birdwell. Clifford the Small Red Puppy. Emily Elizabeth tells her story about how she got Clifford her big red dog.

 

Maurice Senderk. Where the Wild Things Are. Max is a wild thing; he travels to the land of wild things where he becomes king.

 

Erica Frost. I can Read about Ghosts. Andrew is a new young ghost who is having trouble spooking and is afraid of the dark.  He gets some lesions from the new family that moves into the castle he haunts.  They all become god friends and he helps protect the family and their things from a robber.

 

Nan Roloff. Baby Animals. Pictures many different baby animals.  

 

Euloise Wirlkin. Baby’s First Christmas.  A family has a new baby and is preparing for Christmas. They are getting ready for the Christmas celebration.

 

Peyo. Papa Smurf and the Show-offs.  Papa smurf teaches the smurfs that trying to be a show-off and know it all can back fire in the end.  He wants them all to learn that each smurf has their own special job. 

 

Margaret Mahy. The Adventures of a Kite. Children go to fly their kite and it gets away.  The kite fly’s around looking for home and it finally finds it.

 

Daphne Doward Hogstrom. Noni the Christmas Reindeer.  Noni is the smallest reindeer that is too small to help pull Santa’s sleigh.  So she decides to help in her own way. 

 

Renee Bartkowski. Dolls from Many Lands.  Shows many different dolls from all over the world and also about where they come from. 

 

Joy Cowley. The Kangaroo from Wooloomoloo. What you would see at the Sydney Zoo.

 

Joy Cowley. The Terrible Armadillo. A reckless Armadillo causes bath time to get

pretty messy. The Armadillo disappears when he hears mom coming so she never sees him so she doesn’t believe the boy.

 

Mary DeBall Kwitz.  Little Chicks Big Day. A little chicks big day out and all of his adventures.

 

Sarah Weeks. Drip Drop. Pip Squeaks story about his leafy roof.

 

Dr. Seus. One fish Two fish, Red fish Blue fish. A fun and classic tale by Dr. Seus.

 

Bob Ottum. My Little Book of Big Machines. A picture book that shows many different types of big machines and the big jobs they do.

 

Elise Holmelund Minarik. Little Bear. Little bears birthday soup and what will he wear.  A tale of little bear going to the moon and another of how he makes a wish.

 

Cat and Dr. P.D. Eastman. The cat in the hat Beginner Book Dictionary. A load of fun with a little story and pictures for every letter from A-Z.

 

Animals on the Farm. Kenneth Lilly. Animals and their babies one might see on a farm.

 

Clifford Takes a Trip. Norman Birdwell. Clifford didn’t like to be left at home alone so he goes on his own adventure to vacation with the family. 

 

Truck Driver Tom. By Monica Wellington.  Tom is a truck driver who hauls fresh fruits and vegetables in his truck that he loves to drive.  This a great picture book with pictures of real fruits and vegetables and a recap activity at the end where you go back and locate the different trucks.

 

Poetry & Verse

John Grandits. Blue Lipstick: Concrete Poems. Jessie a 15-year-old girl voices her typical—and not so typical—teenage concerns in this, hilariously unique collection of poems. She has a funny, sarcastic take on high school life she reveals through concrete poetry with words, ideas, design which all combine to make pictures and patterns.

               

The Moon is La Luna: Silly Rhymes in English and Spanish. Jay M. Harris and Matthew Cordell (illustrated by).  Funny rhymes to help children to learn numerous Spanish words.

 

Oh, Theodore! Susan Katz.  Poems about an adorable little guinea pig who's sure to waddle his way into the heart of everyone who reads the book.

 

Where the Sidewalk Ends. By Shel Silverstein.  A collection of children appropriate poems and drawings by Silverstein.  This is sure to capture the readers no matter their age.

Realistic Fiction

Judy Dunn. The Little Duck Book. A boy makes a friend Henry who is a baby duck.  The boy helps Henry to grow up until he is ready to go out on his own.

Judy Dunn. The Little Lamb. Emily a young girl helps raise a baby lamb Timothy who become the best of friends.

 

Science Fiction

Lynn Haney. The Lost Starfight. An average boy playing a video game is in for a big surprise.  He is about to become a part of the game and excitement and will have a major job.

 

The Runaway Robot. Lester Del Rey.  A boy Paul is told they are moving from Ganymede back to earth. Paul is excited until he is told he has to leave his best friend his robot Rex. This begins their adventures.

 

G.I. Joe. Operation Star Fight. Barbara and Scott Siegel. The G.I. Joes battle Cobra commander at Cape Caneraville to protect a NASA rocket,

 

Graphic Novels

Charles M. Schultz. It's a Mystery Charlie Brown. Sally decides to take Woodstock’s nest to use for her nature project.  Snoopy and Woodstock try to solve the mystery of his lost nest.
